My mother and I were shopping in Walmart when the call came from my father. He’s 75 and was checking in with her to let her know about his progress traveling to Washington DC over Memorial Day weekend via motorcycle with my brother and sister-in-law. He made it to Virginia with no problem, but had a little mishap with the bike and was now sitting in the emergency room with a broken ankle!
As you can imagine, we went into problem solving mode and collectively decided that a one way plane ticket would be the best solution, since he obviously could not ride the bike back. After some logistical planning on his end, and the flight purchase and wheelchair accommodation request on ours, he got to the airport and gate with no problem. Utilizing a walker to actually get to his seat proved to be more challenging!
As he made his way slowly through first class, using the walker sideways, a gentleman quickly rose and insisted that he take his first class seat, trading it for my father’s seat in coach. Wow!
Better yet, as it turns out, there was an empty seat in first class, so they later brought the gentleman back into the first class cabin for the flight to Indianapolis.
Thank you Brian Kelly. You made my dad’s day. The world is full of good people.
